Concept cars show us the best in what could come in the next few years, and gives manufacturers the chance to show off their design and technological capabilities. It also gives companies who are typecast under a certain label to show audiences that they are able to break the mould, even if it is only just a concept…for now. Let’s take a look at the most exciting concept cars that were showcased in 2012.
The Peugeot Onyx, showcased at the 2012 Paris Motor Show shocked and delighted car fans and critics the world over. Made by the company that’s much more famous for manufacturing cost-effective super minis and diesel hybrids, the audience was left scratching its head with jaws dropped in amazement.
The exterior is stunning, with real copper panelling and a fierce feline styled front, there is seriously advanced technology occurring under the pretty face; a 3.7-litre turbodiesel V8 engine and a carbon fibre monocoque engine – which weighs a shockingly light 100kg – are just some of the best features on show here. The interior may have been inspired by “an egg box” (seriously), but we’re still excited to see if this concept becomes reality, even though the odds are not in its favour.
Suzuki has announced the Suzuki S-Cross, which is due to begin manufacture and launch at the end of this year. According to vcars.co.uk, the Golf-sized SUV will feature 4×4 or front wheel drive, low emission petrol and diesel engines, and is marketed as the family car that is fun to drive.
This car is set to improve sales in Europe, as the 234,000 sold in 2011 fell rather short of their projections. We’re excited to see where this goes!
Another concept to be revealed at the Paris Motor Show was the latest offering from BMW, the Active Tourer. A concept due to boost sales in the long run, BMW have taken a turn from the usual by showcasing the Tourer, due to be the head of a new family of front-drive entry level BMWs. Set to rival the Mercedes B-class and Volkswagen Golf Plus, it’ll be exciting to see how the range takes off.
