America’s top muscle car brands have been fighting it out for supremacy since the early sixties when Ford launched the Mustang. Back then, General Motors was quick to respond and came up with the “fiery new creation” called the Camaro and the rest is history. According to some statistics, Ford has seldom lost to the Camaro thanks to the popularity of the Mustang which made it an American icon.
This year though, things have swung in favor of General Motors. The Camaro has outsold the Ford Mustang. General Motors sold 88,249 Camaros. The Chevrolets beat the Ford this time pretty comprehensively by a margin of more than 18,000 units. Later this year, GM will launch a hotter version of the Camaro, the ZL1. With the arrival of the ZL1, General Motors hopes to further increase this lead over the Mustang.
GM is so confident about the prospects that a top GM official even went on to challenge their rivals (without naming any brand) to come up with two cars comparable to the Corvette ZR1 and the Camaro ZL1. Both cars have undergone intense testing at Virginia International Raceway and have proven to their might. Is all that enough to beat the Mustang in the coming years would be anyone’s guess.
Ford, on the other hand won’t give in so easily. The Detroit auto giant is still betting on its alliance with Carol Shelby to pump-up the pony car. Along with the Shelby GT500, Ford’s line-up of high performance Mustangs also includes the BOSS 302. That said, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 laps the Grand Course six seconds quicker than the 2011 Mustang GT500. This isn’t the end of the race by any means. Both Ford and GM will continue to fight it out and each time try to better the rival product.
