Most of the new cars have a power steering pump. These devices enable turning the vehicles easily. This power technique is used for assisting driving by using the power from the steering pump, which is driven by the car engine through a pulley and belt. The pump in the power steering uses hydraulics to push the entire fluid in the steering gear box. This fluid helps in turning the wheels in a vehicle. When a driver turns the steering wheel, tiny ports will open up in the steering shaft, which gives high-pressure fluid that helps the shafts in turning.
The power steering pump works on a special steering fluid. This fluid is very similar to the engine transmission fluid and should be changed from time to time. Most of the manufacturers will suggest changing the fluid when the car has completed 40,000 miles of usage. Power steering is a mechanical device and sometimes can have defects and failures as well. If there is dirty power steering fluid then it will contaminate the pump of the vehicle and may cause permanent damage if not replaced in proper time.
The pump in the power steering operates only when the car is running. If there is a failure then it will become difficult to turn the vehicle because you loss the control on the steering. The days for proper functioning of the pump in power steering are limited and hence many manufacturers are coming with new electronic steering, which does not use the hydraulics. However, replacing the power steering pump is not a difficult task.
Here are some easy-to-do steps on how to replace power steering pump
